“Celebration of Us”

North Allegheny Diversity Committee Organizes Community Event

The North Allegheny School District (NASD) is proud to announce that the District’s Marcia Martin Unity/ Diversity Committee is set to sponsor “Celebration of Us,” an inaugural diversity event for the community, on November 19 at Ingomar Middle School from 6-8 p.m. “Celebration of Us” is the first community event of this scale for the Marcia Martin Unity/Diversity Committee, which in the past has focused on promoting diversity in North Allegheny schools through bullying prevention initiatives and the annual “Diversity Expression” art contest. “We want to extend the work we do in our schools to families in the area and build partnerships with community groups,” Amanda Mathieson, Principal of Hosack Elementary School and Chair of the Marcia Martin Unity/Diversity Committee, said. “Becoming culturally responsive requires a shared vision and shared efforts in those partnerships.” “Celebration of Us” will feature performances from a variety of dance and chorus groups, exhibit tables from North Allegheny student groups and community organizations, and multiple food truck vendors. The event’s keynote speaker is Tara Sherry Torres, Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Café Con Leche, an organization that creates neighborhood-based spaces for Latinos to connect in Pittsburgh. “Tara’s story is an inspiration to anyone who is seeking the space to embrace their culture,” Mathieson said. “What Tara has created with one aspect of cultural awareness is similar to what we hope to accomplish at North Allegheny.” The committee hopes “Celebration of Us” will be the beginning of an annual tradition that encourages and empowers students and community members to become more culturally responsive. “The message in the past regarding diversity was always tolerance,” Mathieson said. “In a strong community, the message needs to be more focused on awareness, acceptance and celebration of the many wonderful ways that we are all different.”
