Description:

Campus Superstar is an American Idol-like solo singing competition that features students from Pittsburgh area colleges. On Thursday evening, March 26th, at 7:30 p.m., ten finalists will grace the Carnegie Music Hall stage performing the song of their choice. The following finalists, in alphabetical order, are from the University of Pittsburgh, Point Park and Carnegie Mellon: Jordon Bolden, Patrick Bovo, John Clay III, Kyle Coughlin, Tyler Jetter, Dan Mayhak, Erika Olson, Caroline Pluto, Nathan Salstone, Kyle Uricchio.

Now in its ninth edition, Campus Superstar has grown in scale and scope since the inaugural show in 2007. Although more than 100 hopefuls auditioned in November, only 27 students qualified for the semi-finals which were held on Sunday, February 15th. This round served as the last chance for students to impress the judges and earn a coveted spot in the competition for the Ellen Weiss Kander $5,000 prize.

Natalie and Judge Larry Kaplan will be honored for their six decades of involvement with Hillel and numerous other community organizations. Natalie founded the Carriage House Children’s Center 40 years ago and was the impetus for starting the Children’s Rooms in the Courts in 1979. Judge Larry served in Family Court for over 30 years and was the founder of the Family Mediation Council of Western Pennsylvania. They will be honored in front of more than 1,000 attendees of Campus Superstar on March 26th at Carnegie Music Hall, the organization’s largest and most prominent community event.

Tonia Caruso of WQED and Comcast Newsmakers will be the MC. Audience members who vote for the winner are the judges. Director is Jill Machen and co-chairs are Lynne Jacobson and Dodie Roskies.

The Edward and Rose Berman Hillel Jewish University Center is a nonprofit organization that serves to enrich the lives of 5,000 area Jewish students and young professionals by providing intellectual, spiritual, and social opportunities. This event is the largest annual fundraiser for Hillel JUC and supports all of the programs and activities for the students.
