National Aviary Offers Classes for Bird Lovers with Ornithologist Bob Mulvihill
The Ornithologist’s Series presents classes for all skill levels focusing on bird identification, bird nests, and flight
National Aviary Ornithologist Bob Mulvihill will offer a series of three classes focusing on unique aspects of birds, from identifying backyard birds, to examining nest building and flight style. The classes will help bird lovers at all skill levels through a combination of classroom time and field trips for observation in the National Aviary and in the surrounding Allegheny Commons Park. Classes are open to the public and to all who are curious about birds, regardless of skill level. Advanced registration is required. To register, contact the National Aviary at 412-258-9445. National Aviary members receive special pricing. Classes include:
September 12: “1, 2, 3… Bird ID!” Birdwatching is gaining popularity. Seeing birds with binoculars is one part of the process—correctly identifying them is the other! Bob Mulvihill has developed a practical and useful method for identifying birds, honed through decades of study. Bob will share his method for bird identification, then take you on a birdwatching field trip inside and outside the National Aviary!
September 19: “Appreciating Avian Architecture” From massive, five-foot nests of branches and twigs, to tiny nests made of foraged fiber, bird nests are amazing architectural feats! Their nests take a number of forms, from plain and simple to ornate and complex. Learn about the fascinating techniques and materials birds use to create safe places for their eggs and young, then take a short walk through the National Aviary to search for nests.
September 26: “Flap, Glide, Hover, and Soar—Birds in Flight” Is it possible to identify a bird just by the way it flies? The surprising answer is… yes! Birds’ wings differ greatly in size, shape, and number of feathers. Explore the evolution and mechanics of avian flight. Learn about the relationship between wing shape variation and flight behaviors, and observe the flight styles and strategies used by birds in the National Aviary. Participants can enroll in one, two, or all three classes.
