YMCA Offers Diabetes Prevention Program

The Butler County Family YMCA, with branches In Butler and Cranberry Township will participate in a program for Diabetes Prevention in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Adagio Health.

The program is a one year, evidence-based program where participants learn how to reduce their risk for diabetes through weight loss and physical activity. Participants can sign up at either the Butler or Rose E. Schneider Family YMCA branch.

The classes will be held weekly beginning Monday, June 4 from 6 – 7:30 pm at the Butler Branch, 339 North Washington Street. The classes will be held weekly beginning Wednesday, June 6 from 11:30 am – 1 pm at the Rose E. Schneider Family YMCA Branch, 2001 Ehrman Road, Cranberry Township, PA

Classes at each branch will be held for 26 weeks, then bi-monthly for the remainder of the year. An optional 30 minute workout will be included with each class.

The Diabetes Prevention Program promotes lifestyle changes that can lead to reducing the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes in half.

The program is open to those diagnosed with Prediabetes as a result of blood tests and/or have risk factors associated with Type 2 Diabetes. MORE YMCA, Page 2 Risk factors include: • Age 45 or older • Overweight • Have a family history of Type 2 Diabetes • Are physically active fewer than three times a week • Have had diabetes while pregnant • Fasting plasma glucose of 100-125 mg/dl • A1C of 5.7-6.4

In Butler County, it is estimated that more than 61,000 people have prediabetes and of that number, 55,000 people are not aware they have this condition. “Studies show that those diagnosed with prediabetes are at a greater risk of developing diabetes, which can lead to other health conditions, such as heart attack or stroke,“ says Ihlenfeld. “The YMCA is committed to helping Butler County be healthier. This program can change lives.”

Registration is limited to 20 participants. The cost is $249 for YMCA members and $349 for non-members. Non-members will receive a YMCA membership during enrollment.
