Luminari 2018 Essay Competition Seeks to Inspire Local Students

Luminari, a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit organization, which for nearly a decade has engaged students through original and stimulating camps that broaden minds, inspire innovation and promote community engagement, announces the Seventh Annual Luminari Award essay competition for students in grades 7 through 11. The Luminari Award is open to all students in the Pittsburgh region. Each of the winners of the Luminari Award essay competition will receive a merit-based full $1,200 scholarship to one of the most unique summer experiences in Pittsburgh: Luminari’s 2018 I Want to be an Ambassador! Camp. One Luminari Award essay competition winner will be selected from among the students who submit their application to attend Luminari’s 2018 I Want to be an Ambassador! Camp. The second Luminari Award essay competition winner will be chosen from among students enrolled in English as a Second Language (ESL) programs in Pittsburgh area schools. In crafting their essays, students are encouraged to visit and read about the incredible student experiences over the past eight years and reflect on how they can contribute to enhancing harmony, civility and respect among diverse people and communities. The ninth annual I Want to be an Ambassador! Camp will be held June 12– June 20, 2018. It includes lively sessions both in Pittsburgh and in Washington, D.C. The Washington, D.C. portion of the 2018 camp will build upon the success of previous years, when students visited the State Department, embassies including the Russian, Japanese, Greek and European Union, Singapore, and the incredible landmarks and museums steeped in United States history. All eligible students can apply for the Luminari Award scholarship by submitting their applications/essays. Submission deadline is January 19, 2018; only printed and mailed applications will be accepted. Luminari Award essay competition winners will be announced in late February 2018.
