When most people think of companion animals, they envision dogs and cats but did you know that rabbits are the third most commonly adopted pet? Rabbits can be incredibly intelligent and social animals and their floppy ears and nose twitches make them positively lovable! It’s no wonder that rabbits make such wonderful companion animals.
If you’ve always wanted a pet, but don’t consider yourself a dog or cat person, a rabbit might be the perfect choice. Even multi-species households can enjoy the companionship of a rabbit as long as proper introductions are made!
Like cats and dogs, rabbits come in a variety of unique breeds including American, Californian, Dutch, Lionhead and many more. In fact, there are more than 48 breeds identified by the American Rabbit Breeders Association. They are smart and inquisitive and their personalities can range from sweet and snuggly to bunnies with attitude! And rabbits thrive indoors and can even be trained to use a litterbox.
Rabbits have their own special set of needs, and while they can be wonderful companion animals, they may not be the right pet for everyone. At Animal Friends, our behavior team takes the time to meet and interact with each rabbit resident to understand its unique personality and determine what type of environment would be best. Our adoption team also knows each of our rabbit residents and can help to determine a good fit for your home.
If you’re ready to add a long-eared member to your family, you can meet our adoptable rabbit residents online or in person at our BunRuns nearly every Saturday from 2:30-4 p.m. Because the bunnies are free to roam, their personalities really shine! And our knowledgeable staff and volunteers will be on hand to answer any questions you may have.
Best of all, February is Adopt a Shelter Rabbit Month! To celebrate, each rabbit adoption donation will be discounted to $29 all February long and every adopter will receive a free gift from our retail store and entry to a raffle for a bunny care basket.
