Making a Difference for Pets and Vets: Animal Friends Veterans Services

May 31, 2018 08:56PM ● By North Hills Monthly magazine

There is nothing quite like the love of a four-legged friend. The companionship of a pet can heal scars, both seen and unseen. At Animal Friends, we’re pleased to offer two lifesaving programs that use the power of the animal-human bond to change the lives of both veterans and homeless pets. Through Animal Friends for Veterans and Pets for Vets® at Animal Friends, we’re taking our commitment to our nation’s heroes to a whole new level.

Founded in 1943 as a safe haven for pets of soldiers leaving for World War II, Animal Friends’ dedication to the members of our Armed Forces is a longstanding tradition. Today, Animal Friends Veterans Services offers a variety of unique, supportive adoption options to veterans and those in active service depending on their level of need and support.

Animal Friends for Veterans
Any veteran or active military member can adopt through Animal Friends for Veterans. After meeting with one of our adoption counselors, the veteran is matched with a dog, cat or rabbit that is uniquely chosen for their family and home. By way of a special thank you for their service, the requested adoption donation is waived and the adopted pet will receive special benefits throughout its life at Animal Friends’ Howard Ash Animal Wellness Center.

Pets for Vets® at Animal Friends
Many brave troops can have a difficult time with the transition back to civilian life. At the same time, we know millions of companion animals across the country are waiting to find loving homes. Animal Friends is proud to be the official Pittsburgh Chapter of Pets for Vets®, a national organization that carefully matches returning military veterans dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other forms of unresolved stress with a trained emotional support companion. At absolutely no cost to the veteran, the animal spends six weeks in the home of a certified trainer, learning basic commands and behaviors needed to live with its new guardian.

Twice the Impact
There’s no better time than right now to support these two lifesaving programs. Thanks to a generous match from the Fragasso and Follansbee families, every gift in support of Animal Friends for Veterans (up to $5,000) and Pets for Vets® at Animal Friends (up to $15,000) will be matched dollar for dollar through July 4, 2018.
