One of the highlights of Zachary Kass-Gerji’s life was the chance to take a Make-A-Wish trip to the Bahamas and swim with dolphins. Though the 16-year-old passed away four weeks ago, his family is honoring his final request to make trips like this possible for other children.
On Sunday, May 20, they will be holding a fundraiser at The Clubhouse in Gibsonia, PA, from noon to 8 p.m. Open to the public, it will include a silent auction, autographed celebrity and Pittsburgh sports’ heroes memorabilia, a Chinese auction that includes donations from local restaurants, hotels and a limo service, and a 50/50 raffle.
“Zachary was diagnosed with pelvic aveoler sarcoma, a rare form of cancer, two years ago,” explained his sister, Robyn Kass-Gerji. “He had always wanted to be a marine biologist, so Make-A-Wish made it possible for him to go to Atlantis in the Bahamas to swim with dolphins and to be a trainer for a day.
“We were there for three days, and it was the first time in a year that we’d seen him smile,” she added.
Though Zachary was given a prognosis of two to five years, the cancer progressed faster than expected and he passed away a month ago. “He had wanted to hold a fundraiser so that other sick kids got to do what he got to do, so we’re going to do it for him,” said Kass-Gerji. “We don’t have any set goal, but want to raise as much as possible to give other children this opportunity.”
The restaurant is open to the public, and everyone is invited to attend. The Clubhouse is located at 5301 Ranalli Drive in Gibsonia (15044), just off of William Flinn Hwy (Rt. 8).
