Nature Hikes, Butterflies Part of Earth Day Events

While every day should be Earth Day, each April we celebrate Mother Nature with events honoring the environment. Here’s a sampling of things going on around town: 

Thursday, April 19

Ecolution Fashion Show 6 p.m. (VIP), 7-10 p.m., 
Fairmont Hotel downtown

Forces of Nature theme. Runway fashion show highlighting recycled and reused materials by local designers. DJ Selecta will provide music, performances by Vanessa German, Miss Thea Trix, Weylin Gomez and Texture Contemporary Ballet. Tickets $25 (VIP $60) at www.showclix.com/event/ped_ecolution.

Friday, April 20

Pittsburgh Earth Day Sustainability Business Breakfast 
8-10 a.m., Fairmont Hotel, downtown

Hear a panel of experts discuss Pittsburgh’s sustainable business community and learn what your organization can do to succeed by going green. Tickets are free, but space is limited. Reservations are required, at www.showclix.com/event/ped_businessbreakfast.

Pittsburgh Earth Day Food Truck Festival, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.,
Smithfield Street across from the Oliver Bldg.

Participating food truck vendors include BRGR, Evil Swine BBQ, Oh My Grill, PGH Crepes, PGH Halal Food, Sugar and Spice, Burgh Bites, Bull Dawgs, Cool Beans, Pgh Pierogi, Randita’s and The Wok of Life.

Paint the Square Green, 11 a.m. -5 p.m., 
Market Square downtown

World market with a mix of local vendors specializing in Earth-friendly products and services, along with organic and educational vendors and live music, including The Wurms, Tres Lads, Night Sky, Joel Linsey, Spencer Allan Patrick, DJ SMI and the Nox Boys.

Saturday, April 21

Earth Day Volunteer Event/Comcast Cares Day, 
8-11 a.m., Frick Park

Volunteers will participate in tree plantings, invasive plant removals and activities in the landscape surrounding the Frick Environmental Center. All tools, instructions and food will be provided. All ages, but youth under 18 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Registration required at www.showclix.com/event/earth-day-volunteer-event-2018

Monarch Butterflies Presentation
10 a.m.-noon, North Park Latrobe Shelter

Monarch butterflies have fascinated people for decades. Join Kimberly Vensel, the Butler Butterfly Lady, as she explains the mystery of the Monarch!  $5 each for county residents/$6 each for nonresidents. Paint the Square Green, 10:30 a.m.-5 p.m., 
Market Square downtown

World market with a mix of local vendors specializing in Earth-friendly products and services, along with organic and educational vendors and live music. Begins at 10:30 a.m. with Ven. Rev. Patrick McCollum; join a Peace Flash Mob featuring World Peace Violin! Entertainment will include Gabe Reed, Nina Sainato, Little Good Bad, Marc Reisman, Byron Nash and DJ Selecta.

Naturalist-led Walks and Hikes
Noon, 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., Frick Park

Join Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy naturalists for a variety of hikes and activities throughout Frick Park. Hikes last approximately one hour. Brush up on your tree and mushroom ID skills; learn about critters in the litter; look for birds; and much more! More info at www.pittsburghparks.org/earth-day

Great Lakes Brewing Sustainable Sips Pub Crawl
1-5 p.m., Market Square downtown

Stop by Great Lakes Brewing Company’s tent in Market Square to pick up a Pub Crawl Passport, then visit each of the participating bars between 1-5 p.m. to have a beer and get the passport stamped. For every five completed passports received, Great Lakes will plant a tree! Participating bars include Diamond Market, Wingharts, The Yard, Primanti Bros., Revel + Roost, Nola on the Square, Cityworks and Harris Grill.

Sunday, April 22

Earth Day Invasive Species Removal
10 a.m.-noon, North Park Ranch House

Help remove invasive species from different areas in the park and beautify it in observance of Earth Day. Gloves and tools provided. Wear long sleeves, long pants and sturdy shoes. Spring Nature Hike
2-3 p.m., Deer Lakes Veterans Two Shelter
