Rescheduled, see new date below.
Get your figure skating moves ready and Blades of Glory impersonations primed, because Sun., Mar. 18 officially marks the second annual Etna Winter Street Skate!
Once again, the Etna Economic Development Corporation, Etna Borough, Etna Fire Department and Etna Deck Hockey Association are sponsoring the street skate as part of the borough’s participation in the Live Well in Allegheny County community initiative. Taking place on Butler Street between High and Freeport streets, this family-friendly event is designed to encourage healthy outdoor activities.
Borough Manager Mary Ellen Ramage said that while tossing around ideas at an economic development meeting, most people agreed that it would be different to hold a winter event. “But from there we thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun to be able to skate?’” she said.
To create a portable rink, the borough’s event team searched for and hired All Year Sports Galaxy, a Wheeling, WV company owned by retired Ukrainian Olympic hockey player Vadim Slivchenko (also known as the “Russian Rocket”). The borough will shut down Butler Street and the company will set up a 32’ x 40’ rink right in the middle of the town.
“We’ll have approximately 75 pairs of skates to rent and if you choose to bring your own, free sharpening is also available,” Ramage said.
In addition to the portable ice rink, there will be a lot of other family activities on hand. “Most of our local businesses are getting in on the fun—the fire department will set up burn barrels and make s’mores for free, and stores will be offering unique activities and shopping,” said Ramage. “There will also be mascots, face painting and many more fun things to do!
“This is all about encouraging healthy living while promoting our little town,” she added. “We welcome you to take a break from the doldrums of winter and come visit and play with us. It’s a great way to meet your neighbors while supporting our community!”
