DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh-Cranberry hosted the Great Birthday Bake on Sunday, Nov. 5. The one-of-a-kind event was designed to celebrate the hotel’s first “birthday” after their extensive renovation and transformation project, completed in September 2016.

The Great Birthday Bake: A Kids Cookie Competition was a collaboration with local nonprofit Beverly’s Birthdays. Child bakers were asked to enter their best cookie recipes into the competition and present their creations at the event:  36 local youth bakers competed, with more than 350 people attending and tasting cookies.

Cookies were judged on appearance, creativity and flavor, and winners in each category won a custom apron and a $50 Visa Gift Card. Emma Kovarik won in the Fruity & Fun category; Sarah Widenhofer won in the Chocoholic category; Allie Bruder won for Birthday Nut; Paige Baker won for Fancy Schmancy, and the Overall Best Cookie prize went to Kate Boyle, who also received a one-on-one baking session with celebrity guest judge and owner of Yummyholic, Jasmine Cho.

In addition to the baking session, Kate Boyle also received her own portrait cookie created by Jasmine, and a staycation at the hotel for a family of four, gift card from Ember & Vine Woodfired Oven and Social Bar as well as 75,000 Hilton Honors Points from DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh-Cranberry. Her cookie will also be available to order on Ember & Vine’s menu during the month of December.

Judges included Jasmine Cho from Yummyholic, Chris Fennimore from WQED, Yu-Ling Behr from KidsBurgh, Alex Portis from the Food Network’s Kids Baking Championship and Hal B. Klein from  Pittsburgh Magazine.
