Back in 1963 when Horse Trading Days was first introduced as a sales promotion, it’s doubtful that its founders could have imagined that 54 years later, the event would be attracting more than 40,000 people each year to Zelienople for the popular three-day festival.
This year, the Zelienople Area Business Association will once again host the annual event, which includes sidewalk sales and craft vendors, free concerts, a karaoke contest, cornhole tournament, 5K race and more.
“We have a lot of great events planned, including free concerts each night, with Sydney Hutchko on Thursday, No Bad JuJu on Friday, and the Harmony-Zelienople Jazz Band on Saturday,” said Matthew Edwards, event coordinator, of the event that takes place from July 13-15. “All of our merchants will be holding sidewalk sales, so it’s a great time to come by and check out our really unique stores and restaurants.”
On Thursday, July 13, special events include the Little Mr. & Little Miss Horse Trader Pageant, with entrants ranging in age from 4-12. The Zelienople Idol Karaoke Contest will be held in the evening at Fisher’s Bar & Grill, with the final winner to be determined on Saturday. A special free concert featuring Nashville artist Sydney Hutchko, who has opened for Miranda Lambert and Florida-Georgia Line, will take place on the main stage.
On Friday, July 14, families can enjoy free horse-drawn wagon rides as well as Kidz Korner activities (which take place all three days). The band No Bad Juju will perform for free on the main stage at 8 p.m.
“Kids love the inflatables and games in the Kidz Korner, and we’ve got a couple of special events for them on Saturday, including a frog jumping contest in the morning and pedal-powered tractor pulls at 3 p.m.,” said Edwards.
Things continue to heat up on Saturday with the Hot to Trot 5K race, and a cornhole tournament with cash prizes of $300 for first, $150 for second and $50 for third place. The winner of the Zelienople Idol Karaoke Contest will be determined at Fisher’s Bar & Grill, and the evening will end with a free concert by the H-Z (Harmoney-Zelienople) Jazz Band.
