While it hasn’t been a horrible winter, (think Snowpocalypse 2010), dreary days and frigid nights can still cause cabin fever to set in. But if you can get away for a day, a weekend, or even a few hours, a trip to a nearby spa can be all the attitude adjustment you need.

Customization is key at Massage Envy, where services are tailored to the clients’ needs. “We work with our clients on intake to figure out what they would like us to focus on during their appointment—such as back or shoulder pain—and then match them with a massage therapist who can best meet their needs,” explained Becky Baker, owner of Massage Envy in Wexford. “A person might have a Swedish massage that also includes a bit of deep tissue work, trigger point therapy or reflexology. They can have multiple modalities within one massage.”

Massage Envy has four locations in the North Hills: Wexford, Cranberry, Gibsonia and McCandless Crossing. “You can come for a mini-spa day while your kids are in school,” said Baker. “Have a massage and then get a facial—it’s a nice little escape, and you don’t have to go far.”

For more than 18 years, The Sewickley Spa has been welcoming customers to enjoy massages, facials, pedicures and manicures—services that have earned it more than 60 Best Day Spa awards. “People love coming here because of the ambience; it is warm and inviting, and our clients even tell us that it smells relaxing,” said founder and President Dorothy Andreas, of the spa that is located within a post-Civil War home. “Our goal is to make customers feel fabulous, and we strive to do that every day.”

Andreas suggests that visitors plan to spend the day in Sewickley, taking in a few hours of spa services, and then visiting the restaurants, boutiques and art galleries in town. “It’s a really unique opportunity for people to enjoy themselves,” she said of the spa that attracts people from all over the tristate area. “And it’s affordable; people often think that they can’t afford to visit a spa, but our services range from $30 to $300.” The spa also offers special packages, including a couples’ massage package for Valentine’s Day.

Osiris, located in Evans City, has the advantage of being a stand-alone luxury spa in a more rural location, which enables clients to truly get away from it all. “From the minute that the gates open, you know that you’re in for something special,” said Marketing Director Earla Marshall. “Looking around at the beautiful grounds and feeling the Zen atmosphere, you just breathe a sigh of relief.”

When clients visit Osiris for a massage, other services, including the steam room and sauna, are included, as is time in the relaxation room, which features unique, sleigh-style sofas. “Complimentary snacks and beverages are also included with guests’ visits,” added Marshall.

In addition to massage services, Osiris also features facials and manicures using all-natural products and offers numerous packages for couples, brides, gentlemen’s retreats and more.

For those who want to combine spa services with a luxurious getaway, Nemacolin Woodlands Resort’s Woodlands Spa offers the Ultimate Spa Package, which pairs a discounted room rate with as many spa services as a visitor wants between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., as well as a spa lunch and gift. “This package has been overwhelmingly successful, and people look forward to it every year,” explained Katlyn Hatcher, interim spa director. “This year, for the first time, we’re offering extended dates.”

The package can be used on specific dates in the winter and fall, and more specialty treatments have been added to the menu, which offers more than 100 options. Some of the spa’s more unique offerings include a Dreamcatcher Massage that blends Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massage with a Native American aspect, and a detoxifying wrap with a seaweed serum that is very popular with guests. While the Ultimate Spa package includes a stay at the hotel, all of the spa services are also available to the public by appointment.

The Spa at the Hotel Hershey, which is affectionately known as the Chocolate Spa, offers a full range of services including massage, facials, body, hydrotherapy, hands and feet, and hair and makeup. “What’s really unique about this venue is that its most popular treatments combine the spa experience with another luxurious item that we all love—chocolate,” said Reilly Elizabeth Fies, communications specialist, Hershey Entertainment & Resorts.

Sample treatments include the Chocolate Fondue Wrap, a luxurious body brushing followed by a fondue of warmed moor mud and essence-of-cocoa application, the Whipped Cocoa Bath, and the Cocoa Facial experience that features an edible dark chocolate mask.

“The Spa at the Hotel Hershey also offers traditional spa treatments, as well as services that pay homage to Cuba, where Milton S. Hershey owned sugar mills and plantations,” said Fies. “Sample Cuban treatments include the Mojito Sugar Scrub, an invigorating sugar-lime scrub, and the Noche Azul Soak, a relaxing bath featuring white butterfly jasmine, hibiscus and orange blossom.”

Whether you have a few hours or a few days, treating yourself to a spa visit can brighten up a dull winter.
