The Western Pennsylvania Hospital

Founded in 1848 as Pittsburgh's first chartered public hospital, The Western Pennsylvania Hospital has earned an international reputation for excellence and innovation in the care of patients, medical education and research. Today, this academic medical center has two hospital campuses: The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh, comprised of 512 beds, and The Western Pennsylvania Hospital – Forbes Regional Campus, Monroeville, with 340 beds. Both facilities serve Pittsburgh and the surrounding five-state area.

In 2004, West Penn Hospital became the only major teaching hospital in Pennsylvania to be recognized by the Solucient Institute for the third consecutive year as among the country's 100 Top Hospitals for overall performance. Solucient also named West Penn Hospital – Forbes Regional Campus one of the nation's 100 Top Performance Improvement Leader hospitals in 2004 and 2005. The hospital was the only healthcare facility in Allegheny County and one of just four hospitals in the state to be named to the select list.

West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh admits more than 20,400 patients, logs more than 30,000 emergency visits and performs approximately 14,000 surgical procedures annually. The West Penn Hospital – Forbes Regional Campus in Monroeville admits more than 14,000 patients, logs over 39,000 emergency visits and performs nearly 10,000 surgeries annually. Approximately 1,200 physicians and 3,400 employees on both campuses share the hospital's commitment to excellence.

A member of West Penn Allegheny Health System, West Penn Hospital is a leader in the education of healthcare professionals, providing clinical training to third- and fourth-year medical students of Temple University School of Medicine.

West Penn also provides education programs for nurses and other members of the healthcare team, including a School of Nursing (affiliated with Clarion University of Pennsylvania); a School of Respiratory Care (affiliated with Indiana University of Pennsylvania); and the Pennsylvania State University/Western Pennsylvania Hospital Program of Radiologic Technology.
